Merrick | 'It doesn’t get any less special'

Beth Merrick has described Friday evening’s Black Country derby victory over West Bromwich Albion at Molineux as an ‘amazing occasion’.

Wolves Women defeated their rivals by two goals to nil to stretch their winning run in the fixture to 10 matches, as a crowd of 2,725 spurred the Old Gold on to three points. Merrick says the feeling of playing at Molineux never gets old and although she believes the team weren’t at their best on the night, insists that winning the derby was the all-important outcome.

On the crowd and game

“That alone, just shy of 3,000, is amazing. I’m not sure what the other attendances have been,  but it was certainly loud.

“We were disappointed going in at half-time. We weren’t particularly pleased with our first half performance, but we turned it around in the second half and were much better.

“At the end of the day, three points on Friday night at Molineux – it can’t get much better than that, can it?”

On playing at Molineux

“It doesn’t get any less special, it’s amazing. It’s a dream come true for quite a lot of us and for some people it’s their first time.

“It was an amazing occasion and it’s an absolute dream to play here. It’s a great surface at Telford, but it was amazing today.”

On a tough test against West Brom

“I thought their shape was excellent and that was part of our discussion at half-time. We just needed to be patient and have a little bit more quality.

“I thought the back three were outstanding all the way through. We regrouped at half-time, got ourselves together and Tammi (George) got that important goal.

“It was frustrating because we set our standards quite high last week and we’ve maybe fell a bit short today, but nothing more than three points to take away from today.”

On extending the unbeaten run of derby wins to 10

“It doesn’t get any better, does it? I’ve watched the men do it, you watch the 21s do it and we’ve done it earlier on, so it’s not a record we want to slip up on and it means more than you can probably imagine to beat the Baggies. It’s a great feeling.”
