Wolves 5 (Cross 27, George 39, Morphet 55, Miller 70, Merrick 87) Northampton 0

Wolves produced a five-star performance to progress to the third round of the FA Cup, comfortably beating Northampton at New Bucks Head.

For the second time this campaign, Dan McNamara’s side put five past the Cobblers, this time via five different goal scorers, with the best finish coming from Tammi George, who fire home from 40 yards on an impressive afternoon for the old gold.

Wolves dominated the early proceedings, but found Northampton stubborn to break down, as the visitors dealt with a series of early corners, but finally one paid off, as Helen Dermody floated a delivery into Jade Cross, who turned her marked and fired into the top corner to set Wolves on their way.

That goal allowed Wolves to attack with even more purpose, which led to a special goal from George. The Northampton goalkeeper’s clearance fell to the midfielder, who tried her luck with the stopper off the line and watched her 40-yard strike drop in incredibly.

Wolves’ dominance continued after the break, and ten minutes after the interval, the third goal arrived. A floated ball over the top found Amber Hughes, who was too much for the visitors to handle and she was fouled for a penalty. Anna Morphet stepped up and powerful fired into the top corner, despite the goalkeeper going the correct way.

Northampton did respond and began to gain a foothold on proceedings, but their positivity was shattered when substitute Ali Miller tapped home George’s cross to continue her fine run of form in front of goal.

Finally, the scoring was finished late on when a free-kick on the edge of the Cobblers box was played to Beth Merrick, who tried her look from outside of the box and watched her effort dip over the goalkeeper, making it five and sending McNamara’s side through.
