Doyle | On feeling at home with Wolves ahead of Sheffield United return

Tommy Doyle believes the welcome he’s received at Wolves since he joined on loan from Manchester City this summer has been key to his impressive displays on the pitch.

The midfielder has received plaudits after making a difference off the bench in recent outings in Old Gold, and ahead of his return this weekend to the club he spent last season on loan, where he played a vital role in helping Sheffield United secure promotion back to the Premier League, Doyle acknowledges the comfort he feels as a Wolves player is allowing him to focus on performing at his best.

On Halloween open training at Molineux

“It’s good and I know the fans pay a lot of money every week to come and watch us, whether that is at home or away, so it’s good to have events like this where they can see what we do and then interact with them at the end of the session.

“When I was a kid, I’d have loved something like this, so it’s nice for us as players to meet all the kids and all the families and interact with them.”

On his first few months with Wolves

“It’s a brilliant club, and especially the last couple of weeks I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve said before how the staff and the players have taken me in has been brilliant and have made me feel really comfortable.

“I think once you’re comfortable in your surroundings on and off the pitch then you can perform to your best.

“You’re playing against some of the best players in the world in the Premier League and you have to be at it every single day, you’ve got to train as you play, or you’ll get left behind.”

On returning to Sheffield United this weekend

“I’m really looking forwards to it. I’m excited to go back to Bramall Lane because I had a lot of special memories there last season and it’s a club that I hold very close to my heart.

“It will be good to go back there, but, of course, we’re going there for the three points and I want to win the game.”

On growing up to be a footballer

“It’s something I’ve always done, I’ve always loved it, I’ve always enjoyed it, and I’m happy with where I am right now. I’ve obviously got a lot of progression to do and I need to keep working hard, but I’m just really enjoying it.

“It’s been brilliant. When you set your sights on being a Premier League footballer and when you’re there, there’s an enjoyable level to it, but I know I can’t relax. I’ve got to keep pushing and keep improving myself to get as high as I possibly can.

“Obviously, you set your goals but I’m not somebody who would say I want to do this in two years, I want to do that in two years, I just take it day by day and if you perform to your best ability in the now then the future will take care of itself.”

On winning the U21 Euros in the summer

“It was amazing. It was a special group of players, a special group of staff, and it was an amazing thing to be a part of.

“Looking back on it now, I’ve got so many special memories and it’s good to play against the lads some weeks in the Premier League. When we play against each other it’s good to battle it out and try and get the better of each other.

“It capped off a great youth system for me. From under-15s all the way through to the 21s, I loved playing for England, so to win the tournament was obviously special.

“But now, I’ve got to get playing every week in the Premier League and set my sights on getting in the senior squad, which is exciting for me. Hopefully that can be done.”
