Wolves to play Premier League Asia Trophy in China

Wolves will head to China this summer for the first time in its history, to compete in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will play two matches in the competition, on Wednesday 17th in Nanjing and Saturday 20th July in Shanghai, as the club makes its first ever appearance in the biennial tournament.

Wolves will be joined by fellow Premier League clubs Manchester City, Newcastle United and West Ham United, going head-to-head with one of those teams at Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre on 17th July.

The winners of the two matches will then face each other in the Premier League Asia Trophy final staged at Shanghai’s Hongkou Stadium on 20th July following a third/fourth place play-off.

This is the second Asia Trophy to be held in mainland China as well as being the first time the tournament has taken place in two different locations, giving more fans the opportunity to enjoy the Premier League experience and witness a world-class line-up of players and managers.

Laurie Dalrymple, Wolves’ managing director, said: “We’re very excited to be a part of the Premier League Asia Trophy this summer on the back of a fantastic first season in the Premier League.

“Through our ownership group Fosun, Wolves have a great connection with China and it’s important the club is involved in one of the fastest growing markets in world football, while also giving our fans from Asia the opportunity to watch Nuno’s team play up close.

“It will be a fantastic experience for everybody connected to the football club and we all look forward to visiting Nanjing and Shanghai in July.”

This is the ninth edition of the Premier League Asia Trophy, with Manchester City making their third appearance in the tournament after winning the trophy in 2013, while Newcastle and West Ham are taking part for the second time.

Premier League interim chief executive Richard Masters said: “We are delighted to be bringing the Premier League Asia Trophy to China this summer and playing in both Nanjing and Shanghai will be an exciting experience for the League and our clubs.

“The fans in Asia always offer us an extremely warm welcome and terrific support, and we look forward to seeing them in July.

“In Manchester City we have the reigning Premier League champions competing for the trophy, along with three other excellent clubs in Newcastle United, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“I have no doubt the fans can expect some competitive and thrilling Premier League action.”

Ticket details for the competition will be announced in due course.
