Deserve For Doc

Defender on win, and being surprised to take the late free kick!

Matt Doherty believes his side thoroughly deserved their 2-0 win over Premier League Stoke City in the 3rd round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Goals from Helder Costa and a superb free-kick from Doherty himself saw Wolves outplay the Potters and progress to the fourth round.

Although Wolves had chances to be further in front during the first half, Doherty praised his team’s resilience as Stoke piled on the pressure after half time.

He said: "We made some changes and we played really well, I thought we deserved to win it in the end.

"I know ‘Kemes' (Carl Ikeme) made a few unbelievably good saves but we had chances first half.

"We didn’t take the chances early on but we didn’t concede which was the important thing as we have made a habit of conceding goals early in the Championship.

“Conceding early doors against a Premier League side wouldn’t have been the best.

“We deserved the goal in the first half and I thought we deserved to get the second goal and keep a clean sheet.

"The result was what we wanted."

Doherty admitted he hasn’t been a regular to take free-kicks, but it didn’t show as he stepped up to find the top left-hand corner in the 80th minute to seal the 2-0 win.

"I haven’t been on free kicks for years,” Doherty revealed.

"We did some set-pieces in training and I said I’ll take one, I put it right in the top corner.

"I went over there trying to get it but I didn’t expecting the boys to actually give it to me.

"I wasn’t meant to be on free-kicks but I just ran over and asked to take it.

"When I took it, I was just thinking I’m going to put it in and then the keeper made a step and once they’ve made a step they’ve got no chance.

"As a defender scoring a goal is the best feeling ever and yeah it felt pretty good.

"It was a pretty good celebration, I was already halfway through my knee slide before the ball went in.

"I think the whole team was on top of me, I couldn’t breathe.”

Doherty was quick to praise the travelling support of the Wolves fans as over 4,600 made the trip.

"They’ve travelled in numbers, it’s the least they deserve.

"They’ve stuck with us all season even though our form hasn’t been great, they always travel with us.

"At home, they’ve been superb, fair play to them."

Paul Lambert made six changes heading into the game at the Bet365 stadium.

The 24-year-old praised the strength in depth of the Wolves squad and believes that the win has given the team confidence that they could now beat anyone in the next round.

"It just goes to show the strength in depth of our squad,” explained Doherty before adding: "The FA Cup is pretty special.

"You don’t know who you’re going to get in the next round, you could get lower league opposition or someone from higher.

"Whoever it is we want to go as far as we can.

"We’ve beaten Stoke so that gives us confidence that if we get Premier League opposition we can go and win again, whether it’s home or away.

"Look at the support we took for the thiurd round so if we play away from home it will be the same again - we want to go as far as we can no doubt.”
