Finding a win

Gaffer's call for realism

Paul Lambert says Wolves have to be realistic in terms of their position in the Sky Bet Championship table – but also believes just one win could see things heading in the right direction.

Wolves were without a win in seven when Lambert arrived as Head Coach, a run of five defeats and two draws, understandably giving rise to a fall in confidence levels as well as down the Sky Bet Championship table.

His tenure opened with a hard-fought draw at Preston before a disappointing home defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday, and he knows improvement is needed in tomorrow’s televised clash at Queen’s Park Rangers (7.45pm).

Lambert insists wolves can’t just set their stall out to defend and must head to Loftus Road with a positive mindset and an ambition to go out and get that elusive three points.

"We’ve got to realise what we’re involved in,” he said.

"I think home truths are important.

“People have to realise it, or you can be oblivious to it and before you know it you can be right in it.

"We’re going there (to QPR to win - we’re not going to set our stall out to defend for 90 minutes.

"We have to win games, it’s as simple as that. One win could get us on a bit of a roll.

"You look at the table there aren’t too many points between mid-table and the bottom teams.

“It’s not just going to be plain sailing.”

Lambert was also asked at his pre-match press conference about plans for the January transfer window.

With so many players having arrived in the summer the team has yet to find a sustained rhythm or level of consistency.

And Lambert believes whatever reshuffles take place in January, the need is to give the current squad some experienced help.

"Ideally we’ve got to get one or two who know the league - that’s what we’ll try and do,” he said.

"I’ve spoken to the owners and Kevin (Thelwell), who’s been great about it.

“We’re singing off the same hymn sheet which is important.

“We all know and recognise what we’ve got to try and do."

"I think the group needs a bit of help.

“Whether that’s on the pitch or off the pitch.

“They’re a young team – if you look at the back four on Saturday there are two young lads from England Under-21s. They need a little bit of help, on the pitch or off it.

"I think any time in the dressing room you’ve got to bring in people to help, and it will raise the games of the guys already here.

"It’s not solely down to that (summer recruitment).

“You can’t blame anybody, it’s just happened.

“For me I can’t look to what happened before.

“When you’re in any league you’ve got to realise what you’re involved in.

“It’s not just the foreign lads; it’s the British lads, everybody.”
