Play/Delete/Rewind | Matt Murray

One of the heroes from Wolves’ famous Millennium Stadium win in 2003, goalkeeper Matt Murray takes a trip down memory lane and attempts to rewrite his old gold history.

PLAY | The game you missed

There’s far too many through injury, but probably the one where we beat Manchester United at home, and Kenny Miller scored. Kenny scored the goal, and just to have played against Man United at Molineux. There are a few wins against Man Utd and Chelsea, games like that. But, I think that one would have been the one I would’ve liked to have played in the most - the place erupted. It was a tough season in the Premier League, but I just know the fans loved that day.

DELETE | The game you would remove

A few! Definitely the one where we got beaten at home 6-0 by Southampton, and I had a pen pal over! When I was at school we went to Germany, and we did an exchange trip and he got back in touch with me. We'd been flying that season and I ended up getting Golden Glove that season so I kept the most clean sheets in the league, but the day that he [Torstem] and his sister [Maren] flew over to watch the game, we got beaten 6-0 at home and I could see him sat in the stand and I was looking at him thinking ‘what is going on?’ He’d obviously come over, so I had to take him out for food after the game and I just didn't want to eat, I didn’t want to speak to anybody, but you have to when someone's made the effort to fly all the way in from Germany, and you haven't seen them since you were a kid! So, definitely the 6-0 home defeat to Southampton, even though we got a standing ovation off the pitch.

REPLAY | The game with a different outcome

We lost to Southampton in the quarter finals of the FA Cup in 2003. I was at fault for the first goal which definitely changed the game. Southampton then went on to play Watford, who were in the same league as us at the time, in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, so that would’ve been us drawing Watford instead. We would have then fancied it, both Championship teams. So yeah, definitely the quarter finals of the FA Cup would be the one that I would love to go back and win the game.

REWIND | The game with the same outcome

Play-off final, all day. Just an amazing day. I played my part, and still so many Wolves fans stop you for that and talk to you about that day. Or young Wolves fans who’ve parents have made them watch the DVD. Yeah, 100 per cent the play-off final. I’ve played a few games that I’ve really, really enjoyed but that has to be the one. I also loved the game where we beat Newcastle 3-2 in the FA Cup - that kickstarted our season that year.

FAST-FORWARD | The game since you left the club

Especially under Nuno there've been some amazing, amazing moments. I'd have loved to have been John Ruddy for that Cardiff game when the two penalties were missed, and he saved that one at the end - I always look at that and think ‘that was awesome.’ There's been some promotions under Kenny Jackett. But, the one game, let’s say the win away to Manchester City. The win away to Manchester City would be the one, I think. Obviously, they're a top, top side, an amazing game, clean sheet for Wolves, Adama Traore running riot, and I know the Wolves fans would’ve sold out their allocation.
