The Fan Inside | Fabio Silva

Fabio Silva discusses his football fan experiences as a child watching Porto and the journey of supporting in the stands to playing on the pitch.

My team when I grew up…

“I am a Porto fan and my family are fans of Porto too. When I was maybe seven or eight years old, I first played for Porto and when you are young and you see the way that Porto works, you are close to the players, you are close to the club and you get that winning mentality – I think Porto have these things, then it’s normal that you love the club. When I speak, I tell all people and everyone knows the love I have for Porto. I loved the journey when I played there, I love the fans, I love the stadium and I love the city. I have people in this moment sending me messages to keep going and keep pushing and giving me support. I feel so proud to have seen these things and listened to these things, and it gives me motivation for the future.”

My first game as a fan…

“I can’t remember what my first game was, but when I was young, I would go to a lot of games with my mum. I wouldn’t say we went to every game, but at least half of the games I would see. My mum bought me the Porto shirt as well, the blue principal one. I would only go to the home games, I wouldn’t be able to go to the away games because I had training and had school classes. Games against Benfica and Sporting were a bit too far for us to go because they’re about two hours away.”

A memorable game as a fan…

“There were so many memorable moments, but the best moments in the stadium were when you heard the fans singing the names of the guys when they scored a goal. I remember, for example, when Radamel Falcao played in Porto, because I loved Falcao – when he scored, the stadium speaker would say ‘Radamel’ and the fans would sing ‘Falcao’. One of the best memories I have until now in my short career was when I scored a goal in the stadium and the speaker said my first name and the fans sang ‘Silva’. It was the best moment because when I was young, I would see the full stadium sing the name of the other guys, so to hear them sing my name too was amazing.”

The last game I attended as a fan…

“I watch Porto games on the television, but I can’t watch them all as sometimes we have games here on the same day, but when I have a chance, I try to see them as much as I can. I have a good memory, but when it comes to going to watch games at the stadium, I don’t remember these things. I can’t even remember the colours of the opposition teams that I’ve seen!”

A worldwide game I’d like to go to…

“I would say maybe ‘El Classico’ in Spain. Real Madrid against Barcelona is always a good game with the atmosphere. It would be a difficult choice between the Nou Camp and Bernabeu, because I like both, but I think the best games in the season are when Barcelona play at Real Madrid and Real Madrid play at Barcelona.”

A Wolves away day I’d like to be a fan at…

“In the Premier League, all of the stadiums are amazing. If I had to choose one, maybe Liverpool, because there is always a good atmosphere at Anfield.”
