The Fan Inside | Adama Traore

Adama Traore discusses his football fan experiences as a child growing up in Barcelona and watching some of the world’s best players up close and personal.

My team when I grew up…

“I supported Barcelona when I was young. That’s because I grew up there in the city and I played for Barcelona for a long time. I saw Ronaldinho play when I was growing up and it was amazing.”

My first game as a fan…

“I don’t remember the specific game, but I know the first match I watched was a Barcelona game. Normally, we would have tickets because when you played for them when you are young, you could go to watch the games as they would give you tickets for free, so I was going there every week. Also, when I was taking the bus to go to the training ground, the first-team would be training there, so I always tried to see Ronaldinho when he was training. It was amazing.”

A memorable game as a fan…

“I remember watching El Clasico at the Bernabeu in 2005. It was the game where Ronaldinho scored. I don’t remember the score, but I remember Ronaldinho scored two.”

The last game I attended as a fan…

“My last visit to Barcelona was not to watch a game, but I went with my friends because they asked us to take them to Camp Nou. They weren’t from Spain, but they wanted to go and see the Camp Nou, so I showed them the stadium and how it is. I haven’t been back to watch a Barcelona game since I left. I also tried to go back to Middlesbrough to watch one of their games, because I have two friends who are still there, but the schedule of our games and their games made it impossible.”

A worldwide game I’d like to go to…

“If I could watch any game in the world, there are two – the final of the Champions League and the final of the World Cup. Those are the two games I would like to go and see. I would’ve loved to have watched the World Cup in Brazil or South Africa, mostly South Africa, because the World Cup there was when Spain won. They beat Netherlands and scored with Iniesta – we all remember that goal in Spain. The World Cup in South Africa was so much different because it has the vuvuzelas, the dancing and the mood was amazing. It was like a big party. I loved seeing the World Cup there and seeing the enjoyment and the happiness. It was amazing to see the mix of the party atmosphere and the competition. The World Cups in Europe are usually more serious. People go to the game, they see the game, they see their national team, they enjoy it, but South Africa was more a carnival.”

A Wolves away day I’d like to be a fan at…

“I have to say two. Manchester United is one and Liverpool has to be the other one. They are the two I would like to go to as a fan and see the atmosphere. You get to experience the atmosphere when you play in the game, but it’s good there – even though it’s against you, I like it, because it makes me want to fight against it.”
