Signed as a youngster from Brazil, Joao Gomes quickly evolved into a key player in the heart of the Wolves midfield.
Following meticulous work from the club’s recruitment department, Gomes joined Wolves in January 2023 on a long-term deal and brought energy and commitment to the Old Gold.
The season before his arrival, the midfielder played 41 times for his hometown club, having debuted at the age of 19, after progressing through the club’s youth system.
The youngster was quickly in the thick of the action for Flamengo, and by the end of season one, the midfielder had won the Brazilian league and Campeonato Carioca.
Further honours continued into the 2021 season, when Gomes and Flamengo were named champions of South America after beating Athletico Paranaense in the final.
Switching to Europe and England, Gomes announced himself on the Wolves stage by scoring the winner at Southampton, following the popular social media campaign ‘Free Joao Gomes’.
During his first full season, Gomes became a fixture next to Mario Lemina in the midfield and scored a memorable double in Wolves’ 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur in February 2024.
It was his form for the Old Gold which led to a first senior Brazil call up which a Wolves player.

Having won two and drawn two of his first four internationals – all friendlies – Gomes was selected for Brazil’s Copa America squad during the summer of 2024.
The Wolves man started all four Brazil matches out in the United States, as his nation were eliminated on penalties by Uruguay at the quarter-final stage.
