McNamara | 'There are goals everywhere'

Dan McNamara says he was delighted with his team's performance against Wythenshawe Women on Sunday afternoon, as Wolves Women progressed to the knockout stage of the League Cup.

The Old Gold were ruthless in Sunday’s 7-1 victory, with a range of six different goal scorers finding the back of the net in Greater Manchester.

The head coach has also sent his congratulations to 16-year-old Connie Matthews, who made her senior debut for Wolves in the 60th minute.

On the performance and opposition

“I’m delighted that we’ve scored seven for the second week on the bounce. I don’t think the scoreline represented Wythenshawe’s effort, they really gave it a good go in the second half.

“It’s tough because I thought we were excellent in certain moments and in others I thought we lacked quality again. Overall, we’re into the next round of the cup so we look forward for that.”

On Matthews' debut and her impact

“Connie was with Sarheet (Binning) in that age bracket, and I remember her (Connie Matthews) as an eight-year-old as I do Sarheet. I know Steve Cullis at the time had high hopes for them and you’ve seen today she’s a great asset to the club.

“Her sixteenth birthday was only a few weeks ago and she’s come in today and didn’t look out of place. She really composed herself in the right moments. I thought she was aggressive when she needed to be, first contact she was great at, and she’s left-footed! Which we know is a premium in itself.

“It’s brilliant to be able to bring those younger players and expose them to what is a really competitive level of football. Congratulations to Connie and it shows the direction we’re trying to go in as a football club – we want to give opportunities to the right youngsters that deserve it and Connie is one of those.”

On the variety of goal scorers and Hughes’ numbers

“It’s ridiculous her record is, I don’t think she’s at one hundred and ten games yet and to be in ninety-nine goals.

“There are goals everywhere; Charlotte (Greengrass) got a goal again today, 'Quigz' (Racheal Quigley) on the scoresheet and Chloe Williams gets her second for the club.”

On the challenges Stoke can bring

“There are no easy games in this league this year. We were really good for the first 45 minutes against Stoke and I felt we could have put the game to bed in that first 45. They’ve had time to gel now, but we’ve also had time to gel. It was very early in the season, you’re now seeing a different group at Wolves Women as you are at Stoke.

“It’s important we approach that game with confidence but show some real criticalness when we need to. It’s one of those games where you have to win your battle and win your duel before any football is played.”
