Merrick | 'We just made a special moment'

Beth Merrick believes Wolves Women created a 'special moment' after striking twice in the comeback win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

After going three goals behind inside the opening 60 minutes, the Old Gold sparked a remarkable turnaround in the final 30 minutes, with Merrick sealing all three points in stoppage time. The midfielder spoke on her brace, Dan McNamara and his staff's intervention, and wanting to take maximum points in the remaining three games of the season.

On her two goals

“Amazing game, and if we reflect on the first half, it is poor, but I will happily take 3-0 down sometimes to get the reaction that we did.

“We just made a special moment and at times when the league’s gone the way it has for us this year, it’s sometimes about making moments, and we definitely did that today, and we were fully deserving of it in that second half.”

On Amber Hughes starting the comeback

“I don’t really have any words. You can never count this team out and the determination, fight, it’s all about the heart.

“We have got a team that is full of character and full of heart and, like I said, it’s about making moments, and that is a moment we will certainly take, but amazing.

“When you get one goal, it gives you a little bit of confidence and then the second one we knew we were going to go on and at least get a draw out of it but amazing to get the winner as well.”

On speaking to Dan McNamara during breaks in play

“He had the full belief that we could do it as well. At half-time, we were very disappointed, and he was quite deflated, as were we.

“It was certainly on us, not him, to change that performance around and make it positive and give a better account of ourselves.

“He just saw the belief flowing in us and how much we needed that, and it’s all sometimes about the staff, and he credited some of his staff for the way they changed the game.

“Ultimately, we have to go out there and execute the game plan, and we did in that second half, so it was amazing from staff and players.”

On attempting to take maximum points from the final three games of the season

“That is the goal. We just have to keep going, and we want to finish as high as possible, by doing that, we want three points out of each game, and it starts with this big three-game week.

“It’s game one out of the way and boxed off. We will have sort of a moment to reflect on this one, and we will get in on Tuesday, do some analysis, and go on Wednesday, which is another tough game.”
