McNamara's final word on Wolves Women season

After two very difficult seasons due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we are set to finish the current campaign on a high with a long-awaited and eagerly anticipated match at Molineux on Friday 4th June.

Delivering the news of the fixture to the players and seeing their reaction was undoubtedly one of the biggest highlights of my three years as manager.

I’ll never forget the elation on the face of our club captain Anna Price, who has been with the club for 26 years and sadly missed out through injury on the only other occasion in Wolves Women’s 46-year history that they have trod the turf of the football club’s iconic stadium.

Hosting the season finale at Molineux, where we will face our National League Division 1 Midlands rivals Lincoln City, is just reward for a squad of players that has shown fantastic attitude and application in the most trying of circumstances

In each of the last two seasons we have been flying at the top of the table and looking title certainties before the pandemic-enforced premature ending of both campaigns prevented us from securing promotion.

The null and voiding of the 2019/20 season was devastating and the girls had to pick themselves up off the floor to go again, but go again they did and the fact that we had a 100 per cent league record when this term was ended showed their commitment and desire to play for this club.

We also had a great FA Cup run, reaching the fourth round for the first time in years. We have no trophies to show for our efforts, but we have had success – the incredible unity in the squad and staff over these past couple of years is, in my opinion, the biggest success you could ask for.

Now we are looking to the future and plans are already underway for team strengthening ahead of next season, while long term planning means bringing in youngsters through a series of RTC (Regional Talent Club) trials.

With 10 of the current 24-player first team squad having come through the ranks, the player pathway here at Wolves Women is indisputably proven.

As we have shown over these last few years, if youngsters work hard and show dedication in addition to talent they will get their chance at senior level.

This football club is going in the right direction in every way – and we’ll be celebrating that with our Molineux appearance to close the current campaign.
