Late Comeback To No Avail

Wolves Women  2    (Robinson 78, J. Cross 88)

West Bromwich Albion Women  4   (Dale 26, Burton 36, Vinzce 73, Mitchell 85)

A late comeback wasn’t enough for Wolves Women as they fell to their fifth consecutive defeat in the Black Country derby on Wednesday night.

With both teams without a win before this game, tension was high and added to the atmosphere in front of a crowd of over 300 supporters under floodlights at Hednesford Town FC.

Wolves had the first real chance of the game with Leanne Robinson seeing her half volley saved by keeper Lucy Gardner against her former club.

The game was end to end but it was Albion who went ahead in the 26th minute after a ball over the top found Nicole Dale who ran into the box and shot past Isobelle Foster in the Wolves goal to put the visitors ahead.

Albion doubled their lead ten minutes later after a long range shot by Gina Burton was spilt by Foster and was adjudged to have crossed the line.

The first half ended with both teams down to ten after an altercation between Kirstie Bavington and Antonia Smith saw them both dismissed and Wolves went in at the break 2-0 down.

The second half saw Wolves pushing on to get back into the game as they committed more players forward, but Albion struck again in the 73rd minute from Brodie Vinzce’s free-kick which keeper Foster got her hands to but couldn’t keep out.

Still undeterred, Wolves continued to push on and were rewarded with a goal in the 78th minute after Jade Cross sent a ball into Robinson who dispatched it into the net to give Wolves some hope.

Wolves’ continuous pressure turned out to be their downfall yet again when Albion caught them on the break to nick a fourth from Leanne Mitchell with five minutes to go.

Jade Cross managed to get a second goal for Wolves in the 88th minute, but the late push wasn’t enough and the game ended 4-2 to Albion.

Assistant Manager Tom Davies said: “I felt the result was fair, which is disappointing, but we have Sunday’s game away at Guiseley Vixens coming up and we have to pick ourselves up and go again.”
