The development side tasted victory over Blackburn Rovers in their third game of the top-flight campaign following Division 2 promotion last season but went into the international break on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Leicester City.
Despite taking four points from their opening four matches, Scottish youth international Watt, who signed a new two year contract with Wolves last month, feels his side should have accrued more points than they have in their maiden season in Division 1.
On inconsistent start to the season
“We lost the first game away at Brighton, which I didn’t play in, and then we faced Everton at home after that where we drew 0-0, but we were the better team throughout the game.
“We should definitely have come away with more from that game, but they were an older team and had a good team out, so they were able to manage the game quite well to get the draw.
“We beat Blackburn, but I felt we could also have got something out of the Leicester game, although they were very much the better team in the first 20 minutes. After that, I felt we grew into the game and dominated much of the second-half.
“I feel we should definitely have more points than we do have, but we’ve got a new squad and we’re still getting used to each other and learning how each other plays, so hopefully in the coming games we will pick up more points and get up the table.”
On making the step up to Division 1
“There’s definitely been a step up in quality between the two divisions, and that’s with no disrespect to the teams that we played last year.
“We’re playing against bigger clubs and obviously bigger clubs have better players. A lot of teams have multiple players who play internationally, so there’s definitely been a step up in quality.
“When we played against Everton, they had Cuco Martina playing at right-back and he’s played a number of Premier League games, so this season has been a tougher test to last.
“But I feel as though we’re comfortable at this level, in the new league, so we just need to almost believe in ourselves a bit more, believe in the way we play and start to show what we are capable of.”
On teams changing their shape against Wolves
“I do think teams are starting to know what we’re capable of because when we play against them, they’re almost setting themselves up to stop us playing our way, but so far, it’s been a good challenge.
“Of course, we see this as a compliment, because it’s almost like they know that if we can get into our rhythm we can hurt anybody and beat anybody on our day. It shows that we’re a dangerous side as teams will alter their shape and the way they play when they come up against us to stop us from getting into that rhythm.
“Having teams setting out to stop us was new for a lot of our players, but we must see it as a compliment.”
On hopes for his gold and black future
“It’s great to get the new deal done. Wolves are a massive club only going in one direction and that’s towards the top six and the Champions League. It’s a great club to be at for the next couple of years and we’ll see where it takes us.
“My initial plan is to get into the first-team at Wolves, play regularly in the Premier League, challenge for the top six and eventually play in the Champions League – like every player at the club should be aiming at.
“At the same time, you need to be realistic and realise what players we’ve got in the first-team. The midfielders ahead of me; Moutinho, Neves, Dendoncker – they’re all world-class players, so you need to be realistic, take each day as it comes, work hard and hopefully things will fall into place.”
