Sunderland 0-1 Wolves | Match report

Sunderland 0 Wolves 1 (Buur 85')

Wolves were rewarded for their persistence as Oskar Buur’s late strike saw them beat Sunderland and return to the Premier League 2 summit. Having continued to knock on the door, the Dane’s deflected effort earned Wolves a narrow victory on the road.

Rob Edwards’ side had enjoyed the better of the chances in the opening period, but couldn’t make the most of their dominance. Niall Ennis tested Anthony Patterson, while Benny Ashley-Seal wasted a presentable opening when heading Ryan Giles’ cross over the bar.

The closest Edwards’ side came to a first-half breakthrough was courtesy of the visitors, as Jack Bainbridge diverted Ennis’ cross onto his own post, only for the rebound to fall invitingly into the arms of Patterson.

After the break, Wolves probed but couldn’t turn possession into clear-cut chances and were grateful of Andreas Sondergaard saving from Benjamin Mbunga-Kimpioka with his back, unusually, following an error by Alex Molberg.

With time running out Ashley-Seal was released in behind by Elliot Watt, but fired wide on his left foot. Wolves kept knocking on the door however, and were rewarded when Buur met Giles’ cross and watched his effort take a hefty deflection to beat Patterson.
