Wolves v Aston Villa | U23 Match Preview

Wolves under-23s will be looking to close the gap at the top of the table as they face off with Aston Villa in the latest Premier League 2 clash.

Rob Edwards’ side invite their West Midlands rivals to New Bucks Head on Monday evening after a run of three back-to-back draws in the league, Checkatrade Trophy and the Premier League Cup – all of which came on the road.

Wolves currently lie third in the Division 2 standings, four points behind leaders Reading with a game in hand, but four ahead of tonight’s visitors who have not won in their previous three league matches. However, Villa did claim a win in their PL Cup match against Derby County last time out.

WHAT THE BOSS THINKS

On Villa

They’re always strong and do well and they’re really tough games. They’ve got good players, they’re well coached, and it was a club I spent a massive chunk of my life at and I know [manager] Kevin MacDonald well, so I look forward to meeting up with him.

It’s a local derby so we’re looking forwards to it, but we’ll prepare like we would for any other game. We’ll try and win it, try and perform well and it’ll be nice to get the league format going again, as it’s been a while since we’ve had a league game.

On international period

It was nice to have the weekend off and have some time with our families. Obviously, we’ve not had a full squad to work with, as some of them have been away on international duty, and between five and eight have been with the first team, which has been really good for them.

It’s been a good a good couple of weeks and I’m looking forwards to getting things going again.
