Wolves v Hull | U23 Match Preview

With Wolves riding high at the top of the PL2 Division 2 table, attention for Rob Edwards’ under-23 side now turns to cup action.

Back-to-back league victories have pushed Wolves ahead of Manchester United in the league, and Edwards is hoping his players can replicate their recent good form into possible Premier League Cup success.

In the first of six group games prior to the knock-out stages, Wolves under-23s face Hull City – a Professional Development League side – at home, before ties both home and away against Oxford United and Swansea City.

The winner of each of the eight groups will move forward into the quarter-finals of the cup competition.

WHAT THE BOSS THINKS

On recent form

I was pleased with the performance against Middlesbrough because obviously you can’t control every game, and it’s not always going to be perfect, but the lads found a way to win even though they weren’t necessarily at their best.

But we were still good enough to keep a clean sheet, whether that was because of a few saves or really good defending.

On Hull

I like these tests, and it will be a test. It’s nice to be playing in a different competition, in a cup this time, it’s good for the lads to get used to different playing styles and different clubs.

It’s not a knock-out yet, it’s a league format to begin with, but again it will be another stern challenge and one we will look forward to.

On possible cup success

We’ve got a group of players who are pretty hungry to do well and show they can win every game and do their best in every competition they are in, it doesn’t matter what competition that is.

We’ve got a group we can push, and we’ve shown so far that we can be competitive in every game we play, whether that's a league game or the Checkatrade Trophy, and hopefully now we can take that into the league cup.
