Wolves Under 23s face Reading on Monday at AFC Telford’s New Bucks Head (7pm) as they look to bounce back from last Sunday’s 1-0 defeat away at Stoke City.
With a number of players out on loan or unavailable, Scott Sellars has selected Elliot Watt, Dan Csoka and Dan McKenna to be part of the squad for Monday’s game - three players who all featured in Saturday’s U18 Premier Cup win at home to Stoke.
Sellars felt it was important for some players to leave on loan, and he says it is now up to the younger players to that their opportunity.
He said, “We’ve let some of the lads go out on loan because we feel that some of the boys need some senior football.
“Both Connor (Johnson) and Ryan (Leak) had strong years last year and we felt that another year in 23s football wouldn't be beneficial for them and we needed to get them some real experience - some real football.
“I’ve watched Connor a couple of times now and he’s been excellent, he’s really reacting well to the more physical challenge of playing against men.
“That is important and it’s now up to the other lads to step in - it’s like anything, if you perform well then you’ll stay in the team, if you don't then I might have to look at other alternatives.
“All over pre-season we’ve said it and now we've said to the boys that we will pick the best team - there will be changes and you’ve got to be ready for that when the chance comes.
“My job is to get players into first teams or get them into somebody’s first team - we want them to be professional footballers.”
Wolves have a similar record to the victors Reading so far this season - both sides have six points from their four games so far.
Looking ahead to Monday's game, Sellars expects a tough test from Reading but says his players are focussed ahead of the game.
“After last Sunday, the week’s been a little bit different with playing on a Sunday,” he continued.
“It was a game of two halves really, we didn't perform to our usual standards in the first half - second half we did but I don't think we did enough on the day or created enough.
“The lads have been focussed this week and they’re ready to go again as we’ve got another tough game on Monday against Reading.
“It’s about getting them back focussed and back to winning ways.
“Reading are a decent side and we expect a tough game - our group has become a bit younger and we expect our performance to maybe be a little bit more inconsistent but they've got to get their consistency by playing and hopefully getting opportunities to prove that they're good players.
“After the Blackburn game, I definitely needed a reaction - after the Stoke defeat I think they just needed a bit more consistency over 90 minutes.
“I’m not quite seeing that at the moment and that’s probably because the team’s a little bit younger.
“We want to perform well, we want them to play our way and ultimately we want to win the game.”
Tickets for tonight's game are priced at £5 for adults, £3 for concessions and £1 for U16s. Admission is free for Wolves season ticket holders.
