James Collins’ side earned two points to begin their Papa John’s Trophy campaign on a positive note at DW Stadium. After the game with Wigan Athletic had finished in stalemate after 90 minutes, the contest went to penalties and once Louie Moulden had saved from Gwion Edwards, Kam Kandola made no mistake to win the shootout for the old gold.
The opening period was one Collins would have taken heart from. Despite the hosts enjoying more of the ball, Moulden in the Wolves goal dealt with the half chances which fell Stephen Humphrys’ way, while Conor Carty had a long-distance striker saved by Jamie Jones.
However, the opening period was overshadowed by concerning scenes for Erik Bugarin. The Spaniard took a powerful clearance to the head and was down for ten minutes receiving treatment, before being stretchered off to warm applause from both sets of supporters.

After the break, Wolves continuef to match their more senior opposition and a mazy run by Chem Campbell almost opened the scoring, as his left-footed strike was saved at the near post. Similarly, Luke Cundle produced a driving run to create the next chance, but couldn’t keep his attempt down.
Rather than tiring, Wolves grew into the contest as it wore on. Campbell dragged another effort wide after a promising run, while Carty’s firm shot, following good work down the right by Griffiths, needed saving by Jones, as the content finished level and went to penalties.
