U23s fall to narrow Blackburn defeat

Wolves 0 Blackburn Rovers 1 (Lyons 27)

Wolves under-23s fell to consecutive Premier League 2 Division 1 defeats after Brad Lyons goal midway through the first-half proved to be the difference for Blackburn Rovers.

The hosts made a bright start at St George’s Park, with the match moved to the home of the England national teams due to the pitch conditions at New Bucks Head.

Jordan Graham showed quick feet to beat his man before whipping in a wicked delivery in the opening minute, unfortunately for Chem Campbell, his touch towards goal was well saved by Hilton.

Renat Dadashov, a summer signing for Wolves, almost marked his under-23 debut with the opening goal when he hit a long-range left-footed strike towards the top corner, but Hilton somehow manages to get a hand to the ball and time it over the crossbar with a spectacular save.

Minutes later, Blackburn took the lead against the run of play. Stefan Mols’ deliver from the right found Lyons in the centre of the box who managed to finish smartly beyond Andreas Sondergaard. The Wolves goalkeeper had to be at his best to deny Rovers taking the lead just before half-time.

Sondergaard was on hand once again in the early stages of the second-half as he produced a superb stop to deny Ben Paton from close-range to keep Wolves in the game. The hosts spent the remainder of the match pushing for an equaliser, and Hugo Bueno’s left-footed cross fell to Campbell inside the penalty area, but his effort was deflected wide.

As the game entered added time, Wolves went close once again. Dion Sanderson got up highest to a Graham corner, and substitute Boubacar Hanne failed to divert the ball past Hilton.
