Under-23s to host PSG at Molineux

Wolves under-23s will get their first-ever Premier League International Cup campaign underway by inviting Paris Saint-Germain to Molineux this November.

Last season’s Premier League 2 Division 2 champions were last week drawn against PGS, Athletic Club Bilbao and Liverpool as part of their inaugural season in European competition.

Rob Edwards’ side start their quest for European glory against PSG under the Molineux lights on Wednesday 20th November, with kick-off at 7pm.

A week later, the under-23s face Athletic Club, before the final of the three group games on Sunday 22nd December against fellow PL2 Division 1 outfit Liverpool, with both matches due to be played at AFC Telford United’s New Bucks Head, from 7pm.

Edwards said: “It’s a brilliant competition to be involved in and we’re all really looking forwards to it. We’ve just signed Meritan Shabani and he won it with Bayern Munich last year, so he’s got that experience of being in and around a great competition.

“All three games against PSG, Liverpool and Athletic Club pose different challenges and it will be a great experience for the lads. These are going to be top European clubs featuring the top players – tactically they’ll be spot on, physically they’ll be great – so it’s going to pose a different challenge for us as staff, as well as the players.

“To have that game at Molineux against PSG will be great and hopefully we can surpass the 3,000 supporters we had watch Man United last season, because playing these sorts of games against this level of teams, with fans supporting the team will be a big step towards helping the players on their journey to first-team football.”

The under-23s’ International Cup fixtures in full are:

  • 20/11/19 | Paris Saint-Germain | Molineux (7pm)
  • 27/11/19 | Athletic Club Bilbao | New Bucks Head (7pm)
  • 22/12/19 | Liverpool | New Bucks Head (7pm)

Created by the Premier League five years ago, the competition – which was won last year by Bayern Munich – provides players in England’s Category One academies with the opportunity to match themselves against fellow elite European youth footballers in a competitive environment.

The International Cup divides 24 teams – 12 from England and 12 invited sides from across Europe – into six four-team groups, each including two European clubs and two Premier League 2 sides. Each club plays each of their group opponents once, with all matches to be played in the UK, either at the home grounds of the Premier League clubs or neutral venues.

Wolves are one of three sides making their debut in the competition this season, alongside Monaco and Blackburn Rovers.

All fixtures are subject to change, while ticket details will be announced in due course.
