The 20-year-old was also part of the young cohort of players who made the trip to St George’s Park alongside the first-team during this pre-season to get his preparations for the upcoming season underway. He explains what he learned from working under Nuno, as well as watching the likes of Joao Moutinho up close.
On the pre-season preparations
“It’s been going great. I was at St George’s Park with the first-team and it was really good.
“I didn’t get much time for a break during the summer because I picked up an injury in the last game of the season, so I’ve had to go and see the physio, but it was a good break.”
On training with the first-team
“It was a real honour for me to be with the first-team (at St George’s Park). It shows the manager believes in you and there’s a chance to prove to him how good you are.
“It’s been a slightly different atmosphere to the under-23s, but you’ve just got to manage yourself and show people that you’re ready to take the step.
“It’s intense, but you’ve just got to get rested, eat well, get your fuel in, and then be ready for it.
“Every session I learn something new from the senior players. You can speak to them, but I tend not to do that because I’m a bit shy and quiet, but when you’re in training, watching Moutinho, you can tell he’s a world class player.
“I’m the sort of person that when I watch someone I learn a lot, because I’m quite reserved and I don’t really speak a lot.”
On learning from Nuno
“The way he plays, the set-up he does, even with the 23s last year, we play the exact same way, so coming into the first-team, you’re used to it, but it’s just higher intensity.
“I’ve learnt to be on it every day, there’s no seconds to waste, you’ve got to be on it all the time because all the players are top notch.”
On the upcoming season
“I can’t wait for the season to start, but I just have to focus on the now, train well every day, take each day as it comes, work hard and show the manager what I can do.”
