Under-23s set for Soccer Sevens this weekend

Wolves kick off their first ever HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens campaign on Saturday, where Rob Edwards will be hoping to guide his under-23s side to success in Hong Kong.

Edwards, his staff and players arrived in Hong Kong earlier in the week and trained at Hong Kong Football Club on Friday, in preparation for the tournament on Saturday.

Wolves, who are making their competition debut, are one of eight British clubs competing in the seven-a-side tournament, which is celebrating its 20th year.

The tournament begins for Wolves against HKFA Red Dragons, before an all-British clash with Rangers and the final group game against Hong Kong FC.

A place in the top two of the group will be the aim and would see Wolves progress into the knockout stages on Sunday, where potentially a quarter-final, semi-final and final awaits.

Edwards has selected a strong squad of nine under-23s players, who celebrated promotion to Premier League 2 Division 2 last month after a dramatic comeback victory at Manchester United.

Ryan Giles and Elliot Watt, who featured for Nuno Espirito Santo’s first-team during 2018/19, are amongst those who’ll represent Wolves in Hong Kong in the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens.

QUOTES

Elliot Watt: “It was our first training session on Friday and I’ve never played in heat like it, but hopefully come Saturday it won’t be too bad. It was good though, we enjoyed it. It’s our first time out here so we’re getting used to how the game plays, with the surface, and hopefully we’ll acclimatize.”

Rob Edwards: “It’s giving them something different against great opposition. It’s a really high-level tournament and it will be a real challenge. There will be different challenges because we’ll be playing teams from different parts of the world. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the players work out the problems.”
