Edwards proud after sensational comeback

Rob Edwards felt an immense sense of pride as his under-23s side staged a dramatic comeback to all but seal promotion to Premier League 2 Division 1.

Wolves knew victory would put them on the cusp of promotion, given their superior goal difference, but trailed 2-0 to Manchester United with ten minutes remaining. However, the under-23s showed their guts to come storming back with three late goals to win in the most dramatic of circumstances, when the stakes were at their highest.

On the character of his players

“I’m proud. At 2-0 down we showed belief and character, I’ve seen a lot from these players, but I haven’t seen that. It was incredible how they turned it around. They’ve got to keep that. They showed something there, they’re going to be good players. They’re going to have good, long careers if they keep that.

“To be 2-0 down to a top team, with unbelievable individuals, shows our lads have a bit about them. They were incredible scenes to score that one late on. What we have to be now is respectful because it’s not over, Southampton have got a game on Monday, but it looks good and full credit to the players.”

On a dramatic game

“It’s an unbelievable rollercoaster of emotions. I thought the first half was quite even, but I didn’t think we started the second half well and invited some pressure. Whether it was a penalty or not I don’t know, but we were 2-0 down.

“Then I thought we grew back into the game and I thought we started to look like the stronger team. I made a couple of adjustments and getting that first goal is key. It gave everyone some belief. I obviously want to credit the players for digging in and showing some incredible fight.”

On the away following

“I want to thank all the fans that came and the club for helping make it happen. They made for an excellent atmosphere, it was unbelievable. It felt like a first-team game. With the drama, and how it unfolded at the end, I’m thankful they came and shared it with us as well.

“We keep saying the next step for these players is first team football and the more pressure moments in front of fans that we can get for them like that is only going to make them better players, and prepare them for the next stage.”
