Kortney Hause, Sylvain Deslandes, Prince Oniangue, Connor Ronan and Michal Zyro all started for the Under 23s at AFC Telford’s New Bucks Head.
Despite the first team influence, first half goals from Harry McKirdy and Jordan Lyden earned the visitors all three points in Premier League 2.
Although Sellars realises that the aim of the Under 23s is to support the first team, he says it was difficult for his side to play as a team in the circumstances.
“It’s always difficult - we had five first team players dropped on us, so to play as a team you aren’t really going to see that.
“From their point of view, stopping them from getting rusty is important - from our point of view, when we’ve got a body of young players developing it becomes difficult because they don’t really know what each other are doing when they get the ball when they’ve only trained together for two days,” he said.
“We try our best. I thought the first half was really poor - there was no tempo, there was no intensity to what we did either with or without the ball. We got our just deserts, we were 2-0 down at half time and it probably could have been more.
“In the second half I thought we were far better and I thought we dominated the second half but then I thought our final pass was poor.
“On the night, I thought we got into some good situations but we didn’t do enough with it so overall it was a pretty disappointing night.
“At ‘23s level, it’s week to week - what team have I got? Who have I got? You get on with it - initially I’m disappointed but overall I have to be more realistic that it will always be difficult in certain situations.
“Sometimes lads are coming back from injury - I thought they looked rusty and looked like they needed the minutes.
“If that’s beneficial to the first team, then that’s good but from our point of view, we’re trying to get out of this league and obviously that’s three points lost which means we are further behind.
“That makes it more difficult for us - as a team and as staff, we’ve got clear objectives of what we want to do.
“We nearly got there last year and although we’ve loaned a lot of players out, we’ve still got high targets for the players and we’ve got a good squad of players as well.
“It’s probably a game to not really reflect on too much and not review too much and move onto the next game.”
The Under 23’s next outing is against Fulham at AFC Telford on Monday evening (7pm).
With the first team playing Manchester City in the Carabao Cup the following day, it is unlikely that many first team players will be involved.
Sellars says that despite his players being young, he wants them to take responsibility for themselves.
“There’s the City game next week so we won’t have many first time players and it will be back to us,” Sellars said.
“We start to prepare for Fulham - we look at the bits that we did well and what we didn’t do too well.
“Although they’re doing players, they’ve got to take responsibility because they’re actually playing together more than the senior ones.
“There’s a lot to learn for them but I think it’s just a case of not looking at it too much and looking at the good things we’ve done over the season and get on with it.”
