A Convincing Win

A satisfied Scott Sellars says he was happy with his side’s performance as the Wolves Under 23s beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Molineux on Monday evening.

A stunning strike from midfielder Pedro Goncalves put Wolves into the lead midway into the second half before Sherwin Seedorf sealed the win in the closing stages of the game.

Sellars admits that it was a game in which the first goal would be crucial, however once his side were in the lead, he believes that the Under 23s were always in control.

He said, “I’d like to think it was a convincing win. It was a game where the first goal was always going to be important and when we got it we could dictate how the game went.

“West From came with a game plan to make it difficult and defend deep and to make it hard for us to get in between.

“I thought in the first half, we had a lot of possession but we didn't do a lot with it - we just lacked a little bit especially in the forward areas.

“Second half - we started very positively, stretched the game a little bit more and we asked a lot of questions.

“It was difficult - we had some good shots, some good saves from the ‘keeper.

“It was a fantastic strike from Pedro (Goncalves) gets us the first goal and I think from then on we were in control.

“At 0-0, West Brom had something to hold on to and I think they would have seen that as a good result - that’s what they had in mind when they came as they had a very young side.

“We kept plugging away and you’ve just got to hope that you've got that bit of quality on the night and obviously we got that.

“Both goals on the night, I thought were excellent goals - Pedro’s finish and then it was a great move for Sherwin’s (Seedorf) goal and he’s there again scoring another goal.”

Sellars was impressed with the impact that his substitutes had on the game, as Sherwin Seedorf and Andrew Sealy-Harris combined to score Wolves’ second of the night.

He says that the two substitutes have been rewarded for positive performances in training.

“It’s important to get minutes for the boys are I think have been training really well,” Sellars continued.

“Sherwin came on last week and scored a really good goal and Andrew (Sealy-Harris) came on and was influential - I want to try to get these young players some minutes.

“It was a great forward run from Andrew, a great pass from Will (Randall) and then Sherwin has got a knack of being in the right place at the right time and it was a really good finish, it was a really pleasing goal.

“It was a strange game against Blackburn - as we said after that game ‘you’ve got to go and prove it’s a blip, it’s a one-off, it’s a bad day at the office’ - they've done that.

“There’s a real togetherness and consistency in their play, how they train and everything they do.

“As I’ve said for quite a while, they're a really good group to work with and then the young players coming in are helping.

“Obviously when you bring the quality of people like Pedro in and players like that, then we’re really pleased with how they're developing.”

There is a now an international break before the Under 23’s next Premier League 2 fixture against Stoke City on Sunday 10th September at the Bet 365 stadium (2pm).

Wolves have now played three league fixtures, winning two of them against Southampton and West Brom.

Sellars says that the players will have some time off before coming back in to continue their league campaign.

“We’ll give them the weekend off - they've worked hard over pre-season and they've had no real breaks.

“The lads only get one day off a week, we’ll give them a bit of a break - some of the lads will want to go home to their families in Portugal and Denmark, and one or two of the boys will still be working as they're on international duty as well.

“There’s lot for them to do but I think it’s important that they can rest, along with the staff as well who have worked particularly hard over pre-season in getting ready - it will be time to get our head down before we go again.”
