Under 23s to wear black armbands

Wolves Under 23s will wear black armbands in their Birmingham Senior Cup tie against Romulus FC tonight.

Scott Sellars has revealed that the Under-23 players and staff will all be wearing black armbands tonight in memory of former Wolves Academy coach John Perkins.

John, who worked as Wolves Assistant Academy Manager and Under-18s coach from 2000 to 2009, passed away at the weekend at the age of 69.

“I first met John in my first coaching role with Sheffield United Under-18s, when he was doing the job here at Wolves,” says Scott.

“I was always impressed with his teams, and he did some really good work for Wolves with some good, young players.

“Most of all though, he was a really nice guy.

“I was very new to it in coaching terms, but he was always very respectful to me and, over the years I have seen him on many occasions and we had a lot of discussions about football.

“I always felt that I learned something from his experience and his knowledge.

“We were all shocked and saddened to hear this news as John was still working with Stoke and was still offering so much.

“We were all keen to show our respect by wearing black armbands at tonight’s game.

“If you look at the players that have come through into the Wolves first team in recent years, many of them were coached and developed by John at the Academy.

“From our point of view, as an Under-23 group of players and staff, we want to show our respect for everything he has done for this football club.”

Wolves' first fixture in the 2016/17 Birmingham Senior Cup takes place at Castle Vale Stadium, Farnborough Road, Birmingham, B35 7NH and kicks off at 7.45pm.

Prices for the game are £8 adults, £5 concessions and £1 U18s.
