They did themselves and the club proud

Under 23s Coach, Scott Sellars, was proud of his side's spirit as they gave a good showing against Chesterfield in the Checkatrade Trophy.

I thought they did the club proud and did themselves proud." Scott Sellars

Ten-man Wolves fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat as goals Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kristian Dennis either side of Christian Herc's goal just edged the West Midlanders out of the tie.

Speaking after the game, Sellars said: “I’m very proud. Above the quality of the football, I think we showed the crowd tonight that we’ve got some really good footballers.

“I’m more proud of their attitude, their collectiveness and their spirit. Playing for around 60minutes with ten men against a League 1 football team is always going to be difficult and, credit to them, I didn’t really think for any of the game that we had ten men."

“The spirit to work hard and find those gaps I thought was outstanding.

“I thought they did the club proud and did themselves proud in terms of their performance.

“I hope that a lot of them start to really believe that they can have league careers and they can progress well at the club."

The Under 23 Coach explained that, despite a nervous opening, his side really grew into the game and were unlucky not to take anything from the tie.

“I thought we started a little bit nervous and you could see that on the pitch," he said.

“We started to grow into it and the we conceded and lost Ethan but, again, I didn’t really notice that we had ten men and that’s credit to them.

“They didn’t bottle it, they showed it on the night and they did themselves proud.

“We’ve come off the pitch disappointed that we’ve not taken something from the game, at least a draw.

“To win the game was always going to be difficult but when we got ourselves level you started to think it could happen.

“To concede straight away and then miss the penalty at the end was disappointing.

“I thought we deserved a draw from the game.

“We have another two games to go in the competition and, if we can perform as well as that, then hopefully we can pick up some results."

Sellars also took time to praise the competition and hailed it as great experience for the players, saying: “For us, I think it’s a perfect step-up from U23s football. It’s more competitive, we played in front of 900 people so there’s more of an atmosphere and it’s great to have the Wolves fans here supporting the lads.

“I thought in terms of a stepping stone up, it was almost a perfect night for us."
