Toti | 'I’ve been enjoying it'

It was back in September, when Wolves hosted Manchester City, that Toti was handed his first Premier League start under Gary O’Neil and, as the Old Gold prepare for the return fixture at the Etihad, he travels as a key part of the manager’s set up.

Since that day, the defender has featured in every match under O’Neil and started all but one, becoming an integral part of the Old Gold’s usually three-man defence. Last weekend against Luton Town he headed home a first Premier League goal of the season, and after making his Portugal debut back in November, he hopes a strong end to the season with his club could lead to more international honours.

On approaching the end of the season

“It’s been a better season individually for me and collectively we’ve been doing well as well. Of course, we’ve been having ups and downs lately, but it’s part of the season, sometimes you’re going to have ups and downs. We’ve been good as a team.

“I’ve been improving a lot. Of course, there’s still a lot to learn and improve, but the more you play, the more you’re going to improve. Even by making mistakes, you’re going to learn from them. I’ve been enjoying it.”

On forcing his way into the team

“I started the season not playing, but my goal was to keep working hard and to take chances to play, so the coach changes, and it happened because I was working hard, and I was happy to be playing and enjoyed the moment.

“For every player, I think it’s good to play more than one position. It’s going to be better for me if the coach can use me at left-back or centre back. Whatever position he wants, I’ll always give my best and try to give my best on the pitch to help the team.”

On the new contract giving peace of mind

“It’s always good to have that confidence [from the new contract]. I’d been working for that, and I’ll keep responding on the pitch. I was very grateful for that moment, when they gave me a new contract.”

On his performances leading to Portugal caps

“It was a proud moment for myself and my family. I enjoyed it a lot. It’s something I was waiting for and I’d been working hard. It was a really proud moment. I’ve been staying involved in the last training camps with the national team. For every player, it’s the dream to play in a big competition with their national team. Fingers crossed and I hope it will happen.

“By playing with experienced guys, I try always to make the most of it – learn from them and ask questions. Being with big players, you just need to enjoy each moment and try to learn from them, because one day it’s going to be you and you need to take all you can.”
