Bueno | 'We saw in pre-season the quality that we have'

Hugo Bueno says he is determined to do everything in his power to convince new Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil that he deserves to be his first-choice left-back this season.

The academy graduate is heading into his first full campaign as a senior player having experienced a breakthrough season last term, and with all of the places in the team up for grabs following the departure of Julen Lopetegui and the arrival of O’Neil, Bueno is focused on giving his all in the gold and black – starting with Monday’s visit to Old Trafford as Wolves kick-off 2023/24 against Manchester United.

On managerial changes

“It’s been a little bit of a shock for everyone, but we know these things can happen in football, so we just have to make sure we are still ready for this new season.

“Bournemouth was a really good job for him [O’Neil] and I remember playing against them and they really were a good team.

“I think this manager can give us a lot of confidence and good things to try to keep improving and get not just to the stage of last season, but even better, so it’s really good.”

On developing last season

“I learned a lot because he [Lopetegui] was a really good manager, so of course, I have to say thank you for the help he gave me.

“But I’m one of those players who just tries to learn every day, so now we have a new manager, I will try to give my everything to get his confidence as well and hopefully have a good start to the season.”

On being part of a quality Wolves squad

“We saw in pre-season the quality that we have and we are really happy to have these teammates next to me to get this season going.

“I’m fully motivated and confident in the players we have right now because I think we can really do good things.”

On cementing his place in the team

“Of course, the past was really good, but I’ve got to leave it there. I’m solely focused on this season and trying to be an important player to help the team as much as I can.

“People that know me, know I won’t stop until I get to the point that I want to get to. But, to be honest, I don’t have the feeling that I have to be this or I have to be that, I’m just thinking about doing my best every day, doing what the manager wants me to do, and helping the team as much as I can.”

On preparing for Old Trafford

“It's amazing, to be honest. It’s something that you dream of as a kid to go to those types of stadiums, to have a good performance and help the team.

“We still have a few days left to work with the new manager and get everything ready, but I can’t wait for Monday and hopefully we can get a good result.”
