Jimenez | ‘I want to bring Wolves back to where it deserves to be’

After re-signing for Wolves, legendary striker Raul Jimenez admits his love for the club and its fans has always remained, so he cannot wait to be back out at Molineux wearing the Old Gold shirt once again.

The 35-year-old is currently back in Mexico preparing to lead his country out at a home World Cup which kicks off on Thursday but put pen to paper on a two-year deal with his former club earlier this week.

Jimenez remains Wolves’ record Premier League goalscorer following his previous spell in the Black Country between 2018 and 2023 and as he returns to Molineux later this summer ahead of the 150th anniversary season, one of the greatest strikers in the club’s history is excited to continue his legacy and fire Wolves back into the top flight.

On returning to Wolves

“It feels really amazing. It’s exciting to be back there, where I lived my best years as a footballer. I want to keep pushing like that, as it was my first time, so I can bring the team back to where it deserves to be.

“First of all, I want to get Wolves back to the Premier League, and then score as many goals as I can. I also want to be a leader in the dressing room, be a really important part of the team, and not only on the pitch, but outside of the pitch as well, and be an example of how to work inside and outside the pitch.

“I’m really glad to be back and to be back part of the pack again. Once a wolf, always a wolf.”

On wanting to right some wrongs

“I had a meeting with Nathan, the chairman, and when we first spoke, I felt a really good connection with him and with the team again. It felt like I was really going to enjoy it again being in Wolverhampton.

“I think our history didn’t end in the best way, so I feel like it’s time to make it right for the both of us, for Wolves – the team – and me. I knew our paths were going to come back together, so what better opportunity to do it than now.”

On making his mind up

“At the beginning, it was a little difficult, because obviously it’s the Championship, but it’s something new, and something new to do in my life, and in my career.

“I always want different kind of scenarios and different challenges, so it was really important for me. I also want this feeling of being part of the pack again.

“It’s a really amazing feeling, so I want to help the team go back to the where it belongs.”

On Wolverhampton being his home

“It’s really exciting, because both of my kids were born there. We know what Wolverhampton is like, so we are really, really, really excited.

“When I told them there was a possibility to join again, they were really happy and already have a big expectation.

“But also, my kids don’t really know what it is like there because they were younger when we were there before, but they like the Wolves badge, so they really can’t wait to go back there.”

On his connection with the fans

“The connection I had with the team has always remained. Every time I played against Wolves, even in London, and when I went back to Wolverhampton and to the Molineux, I felt that connection. Especially this last time I went there [in May], it was really, really amazing what I lived and experienced in that game, even being in the other team.

“It meant everything. I had that meeting with the chairman a week before [the Fulham game], and then going there back to Molineux, and hearing all that from the fans made it easier for me to make a decision. All the fans, all the guys from the team, it was an amazing reception that the fans and the club gave me.

“I want to be there already to hear that again. The last time was really, really amazing, but now, being back in this uniform with this new kit it’s going to be even better.”

On kicking off the World Cup on Thursday

“It’s important for me to now concentrate on the World Cup and be here with the national team. I’ve got to just concentrate on the World Cup and nothing else, so having a team and having Wolves there already with me, it’s really amazing and I’m really excited about it.”
