Internationals | Vinagre starring at U20 World Cup

Ruben Vinagre and his Portugal under-20 side have it all to do going into the final round of group stage matches at the U20 World Cup.

The Wolves wing-back has starred for his country’s youth side at the competition in Portugal’s opening two matches, playing the full 180 minutes in a 1-0 win over South Korea last Saturday and a 2-0 loss to Argentina on Tuesday night.

On Friday, Vinagre will be hoping to maintain his place in the line-up for Portugal’s final group game against South Africa at 7.30pm. To guarantee their progression to the knockout stages, Portugal need to better the result of South Korea who are facing group leaders Argentina at the same time.

However, there is also a chance that Portugal can make it to the Round of 16 by being one of the four best third-placed teams, with Vinagre’s side currently ranked third out of six.

Other Wolves players who will be hoping to shine on the international stage this summer include Morgan Gibbs-White, who has received his first call-up to the England under-21 side for the U21 Euros, and Diogo Jota.

Jota could make his first senior appearance for Portugal – after being an unused substitute in his country’s UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Ukraine and Serbia in March – in the Nations League semi-final against Switzerland on 5th June.

Wolves players already announced to be playing international matches this summer are Rui Patricio, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota (Portugal), Raul Jimenez (Mexico), Romain Saiss (Morocco), Leander Dendoncker (Belgium), Matt Doherty (Ireland), Morgan Gibbs-White (England under-21), Ruben Vinagre (Portugal under-20) and Connor Ronan (Ireland under-21).
