Paul Lambert says he is looking to shake up Wolves this summer and will demand a hunger and a drive to look forward to a better season next time around.
Wolves’ round off a campaign full of ups and downs by welcoming Preston tomorrow (12 noon), after which preparations will step up to reshape the squad to improve on the events of this season.
And the Head Coach insists standards must be high if Wolves are to press on and have realistic ambitions of reaching the Premier League.
“I’m not going to sit here and dress it up,” says Lambert, who took charge last November
“We have got to be more consistent.
“We have been great in some games and not so great in others and the league table doesn’t lie.
“We have to get better.
“We need to change it and shake it up a little bit.
“People get frightened of change at times – they stick to the ‘same old, same old’, and I think that breeds staleness and negativity.
“You have got to freshen it up with a drive and a hunger to succeed and that is what we are looking forward to going forward.
“It needs an uplift – the same things have been accepted here for too many years and we have to shake it up.
“I don’t want to have any regrets, and say we never gave it a try.
“It needs to be driven on and we have to have the hunger to succeed, for the benefit of the club and individuals, on and off the pitch.
“This club had a great time under Big Mick, (McCarthy) and Kenny (Jackett) did well too, but it has also been up and down.
“It is a big club and it is important we start to treat it as a big club again.
“You don’t want it to be sailing or coasting, and I have my standards of what I want.
“Don’t just accept this is a Championship club -have aspirations to get out of the league
“If you think mediocre then that is what you get.
“If you are playing for this football club you have to be ready for the expectancy level of it.
“We will be better, and we will get players in who can do it.”
Lambert meanwhile is keen for Wolves to finish strongly against Preston tomorrow.
He will still be without Carl Ikeme and Helder Costa through injury, Matt Doherty is unlikely to be risked, but Andy Lonergan is back in training.
Ivan Cavaliero will start his suspension following his sending-off at Derby last weekend.
“It is our last game of the season, at home, and the fans will come along in their numbers,” said Lambert.
“I want to say thanks to the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic since I have been at the club.
“There have been some great days – Stoke, Liverpool, Villa, Fulham, Brentford – that is what supporters breathe for and we need to give them more of those because that support is there.
“There will be the emotion attached to it because the players will want to thank the fans at the end of the game.
“But we must finish on a high with the 90 minutes of the game, because the support has been great, and it is up to us to give them something back.”
