Jed Wallace is delighted to be up and running in the goalscoring charts for Wolves – as he targeted more of the same over the coming season.
The versatile midfield man set up Helder Costa for Wolves’ first goal in Tuesday’s EFL Cup win over Cambridge, before adding the second himself to open his Molineux account.
He remains keen to try and become a regular feature of Walter Zenga’s Wolves’ line-up, and has now posted impressive back-to-back performances ahead of Saturday’s trip to table-topping Huddersfield Town (3pm).
“It was nice to get off the mark – the lads have given me some stick about the way it went in but I will take that all day long,” says Wallace.
“I probably should have had a hat trick to be honest!
“And I have Lenny (James Henry) some stick about the penalty when we got back to the flat that we share.
“I think everyone knows my desire to do well here at such a big club.
“I was disappointed with how it went personally for me last year and I have come back and worked really hard over the summer.
“I want to be a big player for Wolves this season.
“My job in the attacking part of the pitch is to set up and score goals in the same way that defenders want to keep clean sheets.
“I am just hoping I can do that and play as many minutes as I can.”
In terms of Tuesday’s EFL Cup progress – securing a third round tie at Newcastle United - Wallace admits it wasn’t exactly plain sailing, but that the team got the job done.
“I have been here for nearly 18 months and I think every time we have played a League Two team it has been 2-1,” he said.
“These games are never easy.
“Teams come to Molineux and enjoy themselves in front of a crowd on a big pitch.
“We should have wrapped the game up, but had to show good resilience to get through to the next round, in the same way we did at Birmingham on Saturday.
“It was frustrating to give the goal away because having got to 2-0 we had the chance to control the game and pick them off on the counter attack.
“Everyone will agree we played a lot of free flowing football on Tuesday
“Sometimes when we give it away it takes time to get back in shape and then counter attack.
“We are working on this all the time on the training pitch and the gaffer is very tactical.
“And, repeating what I have said before, we are all feeling good and looking forward to cracking on.
“We came through it and got into the next round and roll on to Saturday’s game still unbeaten and feeling positive.”
