Kenny Jackett says he takes responsibility for Wolves’ recent run of form and that he understands fan frustration as the team nears the end of a frustrating season.
The Head Coach has acknowledged a ‘deceleration’ from this time last year when Wolves were playing some exciting football and eventually reached the total of 78 points, the highest ever to have missed out on reaching the play-offs.
This time around there have been four successive goalless draws at Molineux, and while there have been plenty of mitigating circumstances in the last 12 months, Jackett says improvement is required.
“I definitely take responsibility for the results,” he says.
“The buck stops with the head coach.
“For us, during those run of games, it still is better to draw than get beaten, but drawing at home isn’t where we want to be either. We don’t aspire to that.
“It is the opposite (to last year) at the moment – and it’s not a good feeling.
“There has been a deceleration.
“There are some strengths in the squad, we’re not absolutely miles away in the games – but we need to make up that gap.
“And we can see where we need to improve.
“People coming back, young players coming on and improving, and players coming in is going to really help us to have balance, competition, a threat to the opposition.”
Fans have shown their feelings at Molineux in recent weeks, and Jackett has no problem with that.
He added: “It was a culmination of recent weeks, of four 0-0 draws on the trot, and the season that we’ve had, which has been a mid-table season and a frustrating season for the crowd and for all of us.
“Looking this time last year at a very potent side going forward – at the moment it’s very difficult for us to get a goal, or see where goals are coming from.
“I think a lot of the games have been very close, but yes, who have we got on top of?
“MK Dons, we won that deservedly, to a degree we got on top of Rotherham, after that have we done enough going forward to go on and win our other games?
“We’ve kept picking up points, but not enough points and not enough wins, and not enough goals.”
Wolves travel to Nottingham Forest with a sellout away following on Saturday (3pm), before completing the season at home to Sheffield Wednesday the following Saturday (12.30pm).
