Foundation Diaries | Alix

Alix O’Donnell, a student on the degree programme run by the Foundation in conjunction with the EFL Trust and the University of South Wales, returns for her second diary of the season…

Hi everyone, welcome to my second Foundation Diary!

It’s been a busy but exciting start to the year for me. I started a casual coaching role with Wolves Foundation, so not just the hours for my university placement anymore. I’ve been going into schools as a lead coach and assistant coach now as well as helping with the recent Premier League Primary Stars schools tournaments. It was lively but it was really good getting the different schools in and playing football.

The tournament was through my casual coaching hours, but I’m also coaching on the Friday Football sessions and Premier League Kicks as my placement for the degree. I’ve been going into school for lunch and after school clubs as well.

I’m almost finished with the first year of my university degree now. I’ve got one assignment left and then just my MCQ assessment to do before that’s it for the year until we start back in September.

We’ve just come back from our residential at the University of South Wales in Cardiff. The first day we did our presentations, we followed up that with a practice run of our coaching session on the second day, before we were graded on the real thing on the third. It was non-stop but an enjoyable experience and it was good to see all the other clubs there as well.

In my spare time I’m still getting to Wolves games to support the team. I was at the Friday night Leeds match recently which didn’t finish the way we all wanted. I was in the Steve Bull stand with the Leeds fans below us so the atmosphere was mad!

I’m still enjoying my football playing as a goalkeeper for Hednesford Town Ladies. We’ve only got one league game left in the Staffordshire Girls and Ladies league and we’re currently sitting second with a game in hand, but we need the three points to win the league. We’re playing the team in third so if we win we are champions, if we draw we finish second, and if we lose we end up third. It’s quite exciting and all to play for!

It’s kind of nice to do all your coaching in the week and then on a Sunday you get to have a break and actually play football yourself, so you get to be on the other side of things.

For the next few months I’m looking forward to picking up a few more hours with the Foundation if I can. I’ve been looking at one of the NCS (National Citizen Service) assistant team leader roles, so I’m thinking of applying to do that during the summer. I’ve participated in an NCS programme before so I kind of know what it’s all about and I’d like to be involved again.

So lots of possibilities to look forward to!
