Coady | ‘It’s a happy changing room’

Conor Coady was proud of how Wolves dug in and battled for the badge on “an outstanding night for Wolverhampton Wanderers”.

The skipper was referring to Wolves’ all-round brilliant performance against Manchester United on Monday night which yielded the club’s first victory at Old Trafford since 1980. By keeping out United, Wolves kept a sixth clean sheet in eight matches, meaning Joao Moutinho’s strike eight minutes from time was enough for the three points, leaving Coady proud of the efforts of all in old gold on Monday evening.

On an historic night

“It’s a result we’ll remember because you don’t often come here and get the chance to win because it’s an incredible football club with incredible players. We made sure we stuck to the plan the gaffer set us, and the lads were brilliant.”

On meticulous planning

“We’d not had a game for a few weeks, and we were chomping at the bit to get back playing, I’ll be honest. We were gutted the games got postponed, but we knew we had to be ready coming to this place because we know how tough it is, from when we’ve been here in recent seasons.

“It’s always a battle, always a low-scoring game, but we had to be together, we were playing against some incredible footballers, and I thought the lads did that today. I thought we dug in, defended and at the same time I thought we had control of the ball which was impressive.”

On enjoying time on the ball

“We spoke about it a lot and it’s all come from the manager the last couple of weeks. We knew this was our next game, so we’ve been working on it, and it was important we did that. We knew going in at half-time they were going to change something, they were going to be a little bit more aggressive, because they’re a world class team and world class football club, but we were ready for that.

“We were trying to be brave on the ball, that was the biggest thing, especially first-half. We made sure we were ready for what was coming. We made sure we defended well, stuck to our distances, tried to be close to each other, which is so important. It was a massive night and we’re made up.”

On handing United’s forwards

“You always feel uncomfortable against Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo, because they’re incredible footballers, but it was important we went out as a collective, kept the distances right to try to stop them getting on the ball in the pockets and made sure we covered the deep really well, but we tend to do that because we’ve got Jose in goal who likes to come out, he comes off his line, so it was important we stuck to it and we put a good shift in.

“We need to make sure we’re solid defensively, and that’s not just the back five. It was an incredible performance from the boys and something we’ll remember forever.”

On another clean sheet

“You’ve got to defend well in this division, we’ve played here a good few years now, we understand there’s no point going out for a game and conceding three at the other end, you’re never going to win games, so it’s important we stick together, to keeping a clean sheet as much as we can, because it gives us a platform to hopefully go and win a game. We’ll look at it, look at what we did right and wrong, and look forward to the weekend.

“I’m over the moon, we all are, it’s a happy changing room. It was a fantastic finish from Joao, but I thought the whole performance was top drawer – it’s an outstanding night for Wolverhampton Wanderers.”
