Nuno backs Gibbs-White to make impact

Nuno Espirito Santo believes Morgan Gibbs-White can have a big impact on the second half of Wolves’ season.

The midfielder has been out of action since October’s victory at Slovan Bratislava with a back problem but could return to the squad as Wolves face Newcastle United on Saturday. Having confirmed the youngster’s return to fitness, Nuno piled praise on Gibbs-White in his pre-match press conference.

On the return of Gibbs-White

“It’s very good news. It had been a while for him, but he is now well, not 100 percent, but well enough to be part of the squad. Let’s see if he will be involved tomorrow.

“It was a painful situation. We followed the advice of the doctor to rest him which was important. Now that he is pain-free, it’s about getting him into the right shape and physical condition. The talent of Morgan we know, I really think that he could be vital in this second half of the season.

“He was involved not only last season but also in the Championship, he helped us a lot. He had very good games for us. He has faced setbacks this season, but we still have time for him to come back strong.”

On Newcastle’s challenge

“All the teams know each other very well in the Premier League, everybody sees games – Newcastle, with the squad they have, the quality they have. Steve is going to find a solution. We are ready and we know it’s going to be very tough.”

On the importance of late goals

“It shows the resilience, the belief and the character we possess. We don’t give up; we know before the time is up the game isn’t finished so we keep going.

“The determination of the players is key, as well as their physical condition to perform again and again no matter how many games we have. It’s good, but I’d prefer it to be the other way around, scoring sooner and then managing the game from there. This is not the reality; all the teams are so tough, and the competition is strong.”

On the importance of versatility in the squad

“It’s important because of the philosophy we have. We have a small squad and have always operated in this way so versatile players are important for us.”
