Cavaleiro thanks fans for support

Ivan Cavaleiro has thanked the fans for their support after he marked his Premier League debut by scoring the first goal in Wolves’ 2-0 win against Southampton at Molineux.

Coming off the bench in the 76th minute, Cavaleiro took just two minutes to score his first goal of the season, before Jonny Castro Otto added the second a short time later.

After the match, the 24-year-old thanked the Molineux faithful for their messages of support while he was continuing his recovery from a back injury he picked up at the start of pre-season.

“It was a very good day for me. It’s very good to be back, I was very tired, but very happy to have been able to help my team.

“Thank you for all the support coming from the fans as well. I have received a lot of nice messages saying they want me back, so thank you for all the support.”

Although Wolves had the best chances to open the scoring in the first half, it took until late in the game for the home side to get the breakthrough their play deserved.

Matt Doherty, who set-up Otto for his first Wolves goal, said the introduction of Cavaleiro and Adama Traore made all the difference to their side claiming a third league win of the season.

“We played alright for the first 70 minutes, but once the substitutes came on it gave us fresh legs, Adama and Cav came on and got up the pitch, they made the difference today,” he said.

“I felt we were off the pace at the start of the game compared to previous performances, we were missing a spark somewhere, but I guess that’s why you have people on the bench because they can come on and change the game, and fortunately for us that is exactly what happened.”
