Kenny Jackett felt Wolves didn’t do enough to get anything out of tonight’s game against Leeds United as his team suffered a second successive 2-1 defeat on the road.
While Friday night’s loss at Hull was a cruel blow sustained with virtually the last kick of the game, tonight’s reverse at Elland Road was not one in which the Head Coach felt his side deserved anything.
George Saville’s 77th minute goal, his fourth of the season, gave Wolves hope after a quickfire Leeds double from Sol Bamba and Toumani Diagouraga, and although Joe Mason was denied an equaliser the hosts created more chances of their own.
“I thought we started the game very well and the first 20 minutes was probably our best period,” said Jackett.
“We should have been ahead but we didn’t get the goal and after that Leeds turned the tide and they had too many shots against us.
“Although Saville got a good goal back for us with his right foot, and we had a clear cut one-v-one chance with Joe Mason, Leeds had more chances down the other end and had more shots than us.
“It finished 2-1, and in the end I didn’t think we did enough to get anything out of the game.
“It built up towards their first goal when we just couldn’t get out and perhaps needed that second forward up there to help us.
“It was a great strike from their centre half but they had some pressure at the time and it looked like the goal was coming.
“It was building up and in that second period they had too many shots and too many chances.
“Although we did look like we might get an equaliser and made a fight of it at the end I think the overall balance of play was with Leeds.
“They hit the woodwork twice as well, and deserved to win.
“We have now lost two games by the odd goal, both 2-1 away from home.
“We want to be closer than that, and tonight it was too easy for them to get shots in.”
It was another game without a goal for a Wolves striker, and Jackett says the team are continuing to find the right equation to give them more opportunities.
“We are always looking for the right balance and the right equation,” he said.
“Joe did everything right with his chance and he is a good finisher so I expected him to score but the goalkeeper made a very good save.
“Giving him those chances is something we want to do and it is the same with Bjorn and Le Fondre.
“We want to be good enough to give them chances.”
