Quirky Q&A | Becky Anderson

Wolves Women midfielder Becky Anderson is next to answer a few quirky questions.

Most memorable place you’ve played football?

I’m going to say Wembley. I played in a five-a-side tournament there when I was about 17 or 18. I was playing for Arsenal Academy at the time, and although I can’t remember what the tournament was called, all the academy teams across the country entered it, so it was a big national competition. Wembley is the home of football, definitely the home of English football, so that’s probably got to be the best place you can play.

Strangest superstitions you’ve seen from teammates?

I don’t really have any superstitions myself, but I have been around players that have to put their boots on and tie their boots in a certain order, or get dressed in a certain way, whether it's the right sock first or left sock first. I’ve seen plenty of people who have superstitions like that, but I wouldn’t say I've really seen any strange ones.

Greatest comeback you’ve been involved in?

I would probably have to say the Wolves/Forest comeback from 2023/24 – but I was on the opposite side. Even though I was on the losing side, it probably is the best one that I've seen or been a part of. To come back from three-nil down to win four-three in the second half was pretty special. We were really comfortable in the game and had controlled it, but as soon as the first goal went in for Wolves, you just sensed the change in the momentum shift. At that point, we thought it wasn’t impossible that they could get themselves back into the game, and then once it got to 3-2 and then 3-3 it was almost inevitable that Wolves were going to win the game.

Wolves teammate with worst taste in music?

I’m not going to say a player, but one of the coaching staff. Christos [Christofides, physiotherapist] surprised me the other day when we were having treatment and a JLS song came on and he started to sing along and said he absolutely loved JLS! I just didn’t expect that from him. I can’t remember what song it was and I didn’t even know it – it wasn’t one of their well-known songs, so I was surprised when he started to sign along.

Strangest moment you’ve experienced in a game?

The strangest time was during Covid when we were playing with no spectators because I probably hadn't experienced that since I was really young. We don’t get thousands and thousands of people come in every week, but even going from having a couple of hundred there to having absolutely nobody there was really difficult. But I just think it we were fortunate that we could still do it and we still had that outlet. The whole thing of training getting changed in marquees with open sides as makeshift changing rooms and having to turn up in your mask and do a Covid test before every session, it was all just a bit of a strange period.

Biggest character in a dressing room you’ve been in?

There’s been a few throughout my career, but I’ll have to give it to Mai Moncaster. I saw Charlotte [Greengrass] also picked Mai, but she’s such a big character, she’s always got a smile on her face and she’s always the first one to put her hand up and answer when the manager asks a tactical question.

Oddest thing you’ve heard said during match?

A couple of weeks ago, I heard the ref give Forest a throw-in when we weren't actually playing Forest. We were playing Sporting Khalsa at the time and I swear I heard the ref say, ‘Forest throw’ and I sort of looked at her, and I was like, ‘Is that right?’ But it went so fast that I didn't ask her if that’s what she said, because I was sure I hadn’t heard that right, but I’m convinced she said, ‘Forest throw’ even though we were playing Khalsa.

Wolves teammates with the worst dress sense?

Abi Loydon. Some of the stuff she wears… I wouldn’t say brave, but she wears some unique statement pieces. But she absolutely pulls it off as she does it with such confidence. I don’t think I’ve got the confidence to pull it off, to be honest.

Most unexpected result you’ve had?

It was probably this season when we played against Burnley at Turf Moor. I think we were the underdogs going into that game, especially coming off to the back of a difficult couple of weeks where we’d lost against Forest and Stoke, so that 1-0 victory against Burnley was quite unexpected. But it was the turn of the corner for us, and allowed us to really believe in ourselves, and believe that we can compete with the best teams in the league.

Best goal you’ve ever seen scored?

I’m going to say one of my own because I do sometimes score – just not very often! I scored the winner in the League Cup final in 2023, when I was playing for Forest against Watford. We won 3-2 in extra time, and I played a through ball from the middle of the pitch to the striker, and the striker ran onto it, missed it, but it also dummied the keeper, and bounced straight over her and went straight in. So that’s going to be my top one.
