Wolves Weekly | The growth of women's football in the third tier

Gemma Frith takes over from Mikey Burrows for an International Women's Day Wolves Weekly special episode as she investigates the growth of women's football.

Frith is joined by a trio of guests who work in the women's game - Wolves Women defender Ellie Wilson, partnerships manager at Women In Football Amy White and Wolves Academy manager of operations Laura Nicholls - as they discuss how women's football is being impacted in the third tier and below.

Former England youth international Wilson has played at the top of the women's game before stepping down to tier three with Wolves in the summer, and the right-back outlines her footballing journey over the course of the last nine years, while also chatting about the differences between what football clubs are offering their female footballers now to what they were when she first started coming through as a teenager.

As part of her role in Women In Football, White talks about how the organisation is aiming to improve women's representation at all levels of the game by challenging discrimination and lobbying for change in the sport industry and explains why young girls coming into the sport now are experiencing a stronger, brighter and more diverse future that those who have gone before them.

Finally, Nicholls - who heads up Wolves Academy, which incorporates the Old Gold's women's and girls' sections - speaks to Frith about the progression Wolves have made in regards to its women's first-team in the last five years, which has seen the team top the fourth tier twice before Covid ruled their seasons null and void, before earning the move up to the third tier and claiming the FAWNL Northern Premier Division but missing out on promotion to the Championship.

The side have also seen record attendances at New Bucks Head this season, while reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in modern history, which pitted the hybrid semi-pro/pro team against World Cup winners in Telford - something Nicholls in extremely proud of.

In a podcast exclusive, Nicholls also reveals details of the next Wolves Women game to be played at Molineux, with the stadium set to host the Black Country derby against West Bromwich Albion on Friday 22nd March, in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Wolves Weekly is available to listen to on all podcast providers. There is also a host of official and exclusive gold and black content to be found on Wolves Radio, including Matchday Live Extra and Wolves Express.
