Bully to join Wolverhampton's Queen’s Baton Relay

Legendary striker Steve Bull will be one of Wolverhampton’s batonbearers for the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay this Sunday.

Wolves’ record goalscorer, who bagged 306 times during his 13-year gold and black career, while also representing his country during an esteemed playing career, will join the relay as it makes its way on a tour of Wolverhampton on Sunday 24th July.

Due to his passion for the game, goalscoring exploits and tireless charitable efforts, Bully received an MBE for services to association football in December 2000, and he has now received the further honour of being nominated to carry the baton around the city, in recognition of his outstanding contribution and ongoing commitment to sport.

Bull said: “I didn’t believe my wife when she told me that I’d been chosen to be a batonbearer at first, but I’m surprised and extremely honoured to be able to participate in this momentous experience– especially in Wolverhampton, the city that means so much to me.”

The Queen’s Baton will be parachuted into Wolverhampton’s East Park by helicopter at 8am on Sunday by The Wings Parachute Team before being taken on a road relay tour of the city by Bull and his fellow batonbearers.

The relay will finish with celebrations in Queen Square, but not before stopping off at a number of key locations across Wolverhampton, including Molineux, allowing participants the chance to highlight stories of how they are striving for change in their community.

Councillor Steve Evans, City of Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet member for city environment and climate change, said: “As a city, we are incredibly proud of Steve for his outstanding contribution to football and sport, both in the city and beyond.

“Steve is a much-loved inspiration and that is what the Commonwealth Games are all about. So come out and support Steve and our other incredible batonbearers as they make their way around the city this Sunday.”
