Stunning Facelift For Molineux Subway

A main pedestrian link between Wolverhampton city centre and Molineux is getting a stunning facelift in time for Wolves’ return to the Premier League.

Wolves, the University of Wolverhampton and the City of Wolverhampton Council have teamed up to give a fresh new look to the Molineux Subway.

The pedestrian walkway underneath the ring-road links the City Centre to Molineux and it also connects the University’s city campuses Wulfruna and Molineux.

The subway is being cleaned, painted and either side decorated with colourful new vinyl walls depicting Wolves’ history on one side and life at the University of Wolverhampton on the other.

There will also be illuminated “Welcome to the City of Wolverhampton” signs installed at both ends of the subway with logos of both organisations joined with the new City of Wolverhampton brand. CCTV is also being installed.

The first phase of the work at the Molineux end of the subway is set to be unveiled in time for Wolves’ televised return to Premier League against Everton at Molineux on Saturday 11 August.

Professor Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: “The subway is a vital artery which connects the city and is used by thousands of students, fans and visitors every year.

“Working with the club and the council we wanted to make sure that the people using it had a better experience of their visit to Wolverhampton.

“With Wolves back in the Premier League, the University continuing to go from strength to strength and the ongoing regeneration work in the city centre it made absolute sense to work together to transform the space.”

Laurie Dalrymple, Managing Director of Wolves, said: “We are always looking at ways of improving the experience of fans coming to Molineux, and have invested in making improvements in and around the stadium, so this was a natural progression ahead of the Premier League season.

“Thousands of people come through the subway every home game and this will brighten up the area, as well as offering supporters and visitors an insight into our history and also that of the University.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing the finished product, and can’t wait for supporters coming to the first match back in the Premier League to see it as well.”

Councillor John Reynolds, Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “We now boast a Premier League club, and, as a Wolves fan myself, I’m sure the new-look subway will fill supporters with a sense of pride as they walk up to the stadium on matchdays.

“More than £3.7 billion of investment is on site or planned for the city. Included in these investment plans are major improvements to the way people move around the city centre - ensuring it is well connected, pleasant and an inviting place to visit.

"This subway project is an example of that and again shows how working closely with two of our city partners – Wolves and the University – we are regenerating the city.”
