Wolves Wishes: A Golden Day

Bully Meets Mr & Mrs Jones

Wolves fans Rob and Mal (Marilyn) Jones enjoyed the perfect stage to mark their 50th wedding anniversary – a Golden day out at Molineux for a Golden Anniversary.

As part of the Wolves Wishes initiative where fans are nominated to receive a special treat, Wolves’ Ticket Office Sales advisor Laura Cahill-Hirst knew exactly who she had to nominate.

And the happy couple also had a visit from Wolves Vice-President and record goalscorer Steve Bull to mark the occasion.

“Mr and Mrs Jones went to a Wolves game at Blackpool on one of their first ever dates, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Boxing Day,” said Laura.

“I think they deserve a treat as they are such a lovely couple who have spent most wedding anniversaries here cheering on Wolves.”

That game at Blackpool took place in September, 1963, when two goals from Ray Crawford earned Wolves a 2-1 victory.

And while Wolves were away at Blackpool last Boxing Day, they were the visitors to Molineux for the first home game of 2015, and Mr and Mrs Jones were invited to enjoy some hospitality as part of Wolves Wishes.

“It was an absolutely brilliant day, and one we will always remember,” said Rob.

“I’ve been watching Wolves since I was eight or nine, and even turned down the chance to be an apprentice jockey once because it would mean not being able to go to the games.

“We used to have Season Tickets in the old Molineux Street Stand, and still get along to plenty of games when we can.

“The away game at Blackpool back in September was almost 51 years to the day since we went to a game on one of our first dates, and we celebrated 50 years of marriage on Boxing Day just gone.

“It was lovely for Laura to think of us with the Wolves Wishes, and we had a great day with a three course meal and then tickets in the comfy seats above the tunnel!

“Stevie Bull presented us with a bouquet of flowers, we were given a bottle of champagne, and also saw Graham Turner and Dave Jones who were there for the tribute to Sir Jack.

“I even bought myself an autograph book after and bumped into Carl Ikeme as he was leaving.

“It was packed in a box which I was struggling to open but Carl just smashed it open and then signed his autograph for me!

“It was a great day – my wife is one of those people who is always giving to others and this was one of the few occasions when someone had given something back to us.”
