Under-18s set for FA Youth Cup clash at Molineux

Wolves under-18s will play their first match of the 2021/22 season at Molineux in a few weeks time when they face Salford City in the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

Steve Davis’ young team haven't played at the stadium for almost two years, but will make their first Molineux outing of the campaign against the League Two club's development side from 7pm on Wednesday 8th December.

“The players will be excited to play in the FA Youth Cup,” Davis said. “They were really keen on seeing who we were going to draw, and as soon as we knew it was Salford, they were all talking about it.

“It’s always something the young players look forward to and a game they want to play in. We’ve got a reasonable squad of players this year who will all be looking forward to the game, as and when it comes.

“We’ve got some important games before it to focus on, but in the meantime, I’ll be watching Salford and I’ll try and go this weekend to watch them and see what they’re like before we face them at Molineux.”

Last season, with football being played behind closed doors, the under-18s played their home FA Youth Cup tie at St George’s Park, having fallen at the first hurdle against Norwich City, but will return to Molineux this time as they aim to replicate the run of 2019/20, which saw Davis’ side overcome both Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace under the lights.

“We won’t treat the game any differently than we would our usual league matches,” Davis insisted. “For us, it’s another game, but it’s a prestigious competition that the players always look forward to playing in, especially when it’s at Molineux.

“It’s obviously a nice experience to play on your home ground, in a stadium, and hopefully we can get a few people in to watch and create a good atmosphere. That would be a great experience for them.”

Salford reached this stage of the competition after an extra-time win over Port Vale in the second round.
