Wolves 2 Blackburn 1 | Match report

Austin Samuels’ late winner secured three points for Wolves Under-18s against Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League U18 North at Compton Park.

After a very early goal from Chem Campbell in the opening minute of the match, it was Samuels’ 84th minute goal which won the tie for Darren Ryan's side after Jalil Saadi had equalised.

It was the home side who had the better opening to the first half after Campbell was able to slot the ball into the back of the net after a scramble in the opposition’s box.

Both goalkeepers were tested throughout the remainder of the first half but neither team was able to be successful in finding the second goal of the match prior to the half-time whistle.

With the second 45 minutes under way, Wolves did well to hold a good defensive shape to deny any chance Blackburn had of scoring.

However, a loose ball at the back post fell to Saadi who was able to get his team level with ten minutes left to play.

The frustrating equaliser gave Wolves a last boost of energy which was shown through substitute Conor Carty’s bolstering run down the left-hand side of the pitch which allowed him to whip in a cross to the centre of the box. A great run by Samuels put him in the perfect position to fire the ball past Ben Winterbottom and regain the lead for Wolves.

Blackburn tried to retaliate quickly as time was running out - captain Samuel Barnes’ attempt at a second equaliser hit the post, but Wolves were worthy winners.

QUOTES

Manager Ryan spoke highly of his team and what they achieved in their match. He said: “I’m really pleased with the win - the first half was really good.

“They deserve it, because against Manchester United they were excellent. In possession we were always very good. We can still be better out of possession, but the lads took ownership and made themselves more compact as the game went on.”
