Wolverhampton is located in the middle of England, about 2 hours from London. The easiest way to get to Wolverhampton is by train, car or plane, depending on where you’re starting from.
Train
For most visitors travelling to Wolverhampton to watch a match, train is the best option. Trains depart from Euston Station in London, arriving in Wolverhampton in about two hours depending on which train you take.
Important: Unlike in Korea, train tickets in the UK get significantly more expensive as you near the travel date. If you know when you want to be in Wolverhampton, it’s best to book tickets as early as possible to get the best price.
Tickets can be purchased online through a number of different websites — two of the most popular are thetrainline.com and nationalrail.co.uk.
When purchasing tickets there are normally two different options, an “advance” and an “anytime” ticket. Advance tickets will be cheaper, but they limit you to traveling only on the train specified on the ticket. Anytime tickets are much more expensive but can be used at any time on the specified day.
Tickets are usually split between “peak” and “off-peak.” Peak tickets are for traveling during commuting hours and are much more expensive than off-peak tickets. If you’re traveling to Wolverhampton on the weekend this won’t be an issue because all the tickets are off-peak, but if you’re traveling on a weekday, make sure to adjust your travel times to avoid commuting hours.
When booking tickets, be aware that delays are common in the UK so it’s good to give yourself plenty of time to get to the game. Keep an eye on the board in the station because platforms are often changed at the last minute.
If your train is cancelled, don’t panic — you will normally be allowed to travel on a different train, just speak to the staff in the station.
Car
If you’ve rented a car while you’re in the UK, Wolverhampton is very easy to reach.
Important: UK drivers tend to drive manual vehicles, so make sure to specifically select an automatic vehicle when you book your car. Driving is on the left in the UK and roundabouts are very common.
Wolverhampton sits just off the M6 in the middle of England and is easily accessible from most of the country. Wolverhampton is about a 200-kilometer drive north of central London and about a 140-kilometer drive south from Liverpool or Manchester.
Popular tourist destinations are also not too far away. Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, is about an hour’s drive away, and Oxford is about two hours away.
The three destinations are arranged in a line, so you could take a road trip from London to Oxford, then on to Stratford and up to Wolverhampton. From there, you can keep going north to Liverpool and Manchester or circle back around to head south again.
휴게소 are common in the UK on major roads (roads starting with an M) and are called “service stations.” Like in Korea, they will be signposted in advance so you can decide if you want to stop.
The food selection is quite different from Korea — generally a service station has some sort of fast food option and a couple of shops, but not the extensive food options you generally find in Korea.
Plane
If you’re travelling to the UK from somewhere else in Europe, you don’t have to go via London to get to Wolverhampton.
Wolverhampton is just a short train ride away from Birmingham International Airport, which you can fly to from most destinations in Europe and even the United States, China and Australia.
If you fly into Birmingham International Airport, just head to the Birmingham International and it takes less than an hour to get to Wolverhampton. These trains are very regular, so you don’t have to book in advance.
If you’re flying into a different airport and want to trave straight to Wolverhampton, make sure to leave plenty of travel time. While there are some airport bus services, the most efficient way to travel from an airport is to head into the nearest city and take a regular train service from there. This can take a long time, so be careful to plan accordingly.
