Women’s Preview | Challenge Cup Final

Wolves Women have the opportunity to lift silverware for the first time this season when they face Rugby Borough in the Birmingham FA Challenge Cup Final on Sunday.

The Old Gold head to the Valley Stadium, Redditch, hoping to lift the trophy for the first time since 2023 but will face a Rugby opposition who have been victorious over Wolves in this competition before.

Setting the scene

Last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Stoke City ensured the FA WNL Northern Premier Division title is finely poised going into the final match of the season next weekend, with Wolves sitting one point behind Burnley ahead of the finale. Georgia Marshall’s sixth of the season, coupled with a Charlotte Greengrass brace secured the come-from-behind win at Wellbeing Park.

Rugby were well amongst the goals in their last outing, sharing six goals in a 3-3 draw at Liverpool Feds – coming from 2-0 and 3-2 down to claim a point.

How we got here

The two sides are remarkably matched in terms of their progression in this competition this season having both scored 22 goals in their three matches. Wolves cruised past Hednesford Town 12-0 and Birmingham City 8-0 before two second half goals from Racheal Quigley secured a 2-0 win over rivals West Brom in the semi-final.

Rugby’s haul came from a 6-0 win over Solihull Moors, a 10-1 hammering of Stourbridge and 6-0 win over Aston Villa PGA.

This will be the second time in three years that the two have contested the final having played out a breathtaking 4-4 draw at the Pirelli Stadium in the 2024 final, which saw Borough claim victory on penalties.
